You know what’s better than pressing snooze on a Monday morning? Rolling out of bed to go punch stuff. More specifically, rolling out of bed to go punch a heavy bag at Rittenhouse’s CKO Kickboxing. And you know what’s even BETTER than that? Punching things at CKO Kickboxing and then getting your savasana on at the neighboring CorePower Yoga. And that’s exactly how our morning starting at our Be Well Philly Underground Sunrise Kickboxing and Savasana event today, alongside a crew of dedicated Be Well Philly Undergrounders who will officially serve as our Monday early-morning workout motivation heroes from here on out.
I’ve got good news for everyone who hangs out in Cherry Hill or North Wales on the regular: CorePower Yoga, the national boutique yoga studio with upwards of 150 locations across the country, is bringing new studios your way this winter. CorePower is opening one studio in Cherry Hill and one in North Wales, both slated to open their doors in December, though exact dates have yet to be announced.
Picture this: It’s a Thursday, mid-morning, and you’re slumped over at your desk trying to decide what’s more vital when it comes to getting you through the day, an afternoon sweat session or a running to grab a healthy, energizing lunch. But before you waste time making a pros and cons list, listen up: Our friends over at Rittenhouse’s CorePower Yoga are helping you kill both birds with one stone.

Let’s be honest: Awesome Monday nights — like, truly awesome Monday nights — are pretty rare, at least for me. Monday nights in my world are usually reserved for catching up on The Real Housewives. (I am not ashamed, though I probably should be.) But last night was a truly awesome Monday night. Last night, we teamed up with our friends from Rittenhouse’s CorePower Yoga and Sweetgreen for our Be Well Philly Underground Sweat and Salads event, a hot yoga class followed by — wait for it — free Sweetgreen salads for all. See? Awesome. Read more »
“Just relax your leg!” the doctor said with a smirk while shaking my suspended limb back and forth. “My leg is relaxed, it just refuses to bend!” I responded with a hint of frustration and embarrassment in my voice.
I was 13 years old when my pediatrician sent me to St. Christopher’s Hospital to get tested for scoliosis. This was probably my fourth visit in as many years. He was hell-bent in his belief my spine was developing a curve and every visit I feared I’d actually be diagnosed this time. Little did I know I was about to become a medical enigma for a completely different reason.
Part of the test, for reasons unknown to me, involved checking the flexibility of my hamstrings. The doctor’s assistant was the first to take on the challenge of pushing my leg to my chest. I just laid on the examination table watching this poor lady attempt to find a trace of flexibility in my leg. The assistant, after laughing with my mom about the situation – which definitely made me feel normal — left to grab the orthopedic doctor. His efforts were also wasted. After pushing and pulling my leg like a stick shift, the resistance left him stunned. While the test for scoliosis came back negative, I left St. Christopher’s scarred with the memory of the wrestling match between my legs and their staff.
Clearly, flexibility and my name have no business being in the same sentence. But as the intern for Be Well Philly, I felt it was my duty to experience yoga for myself. Plus, I love a challenge and I’m no stranger to making a fool of myself. So when my editor suggested I try a class at CorePower Yoga on Walnut Street, I accepted with enthusiasm but feared the worst. Surely enough, my fears came true. And then some. Read more »

1616 Walnut Street is about to get a whole lot sweatier. Come October, not one, but two new fitness studios will be setting up shop in the Rittenhouse space: CorePower Yoga, a hot yoga company and CKO Kickboxing, a fitness kickboxing spot. Such convenient neighbors, right? And the separate fitness studios tell us they’re hoping to make the most out of their convenient living situation by working together in some capacity — maybe with crossover deals or special events — in the future.
But before we get too excited about them teaming up, best to know what each studio does best on its own. We chatted with both studios to get the lowdown on what folks can expect once they open their doors, plus where you can try their workouts before that time comes. Check out the full scoop below.
