The freedom fighters at South Philly Barbacoa and PAUWR, Cristina Martinez and Benjamin Miller, are organizing Philly restaurants for a May 1st general strike that will highlight the contributions of undocumented immigrants in the restaurant industry.
The restaurant will be closed on May 1st as part of the planned #ADayWithoutImmigrants strike. And several of the city’s top restaurants have joined them.

Bon Appetit has announced its annual Hot 10 list of the best new restaurants in America and Philadelphia’s South Philly Barbacoa placed 6th on the list. Deputy editor Andrew Knowlton and senior editor Julia Kramer traveled more than 5,700 miles to more than 40 cities to create this list of the best new restaurants in the country.

South Philly Barbacoa’s Benjamin Miller has been a vocal supporter of immigrant restaurant workers and he is going to be hosting a series of events to raise awareness and show solidarity with those unable to work legally in the United States. On Monday, November 30th, he is hosting a dinner upstairs at Nomad Pizza. The event will begin at 6:30 with a meet-and-greet, dinner, presentations and live music.
A donation is requested for the dinner and the event will be capped at 50 people. Chefs Nick Macri (La Divisa Meats), Calvin Okunoye (Restaurant Opportunities Center), Cristina Martinez (South Philly Barbacoa) and Elijah Milligan (H2o Kitchen).

Earlier this month we told you Benjamin Miller and his wife Cristina Martinez were looking to open a South Philadelphia Barbacoa at 1002 Watkins Street. The couple was to have a neighborhood zoning meeting regarding the project this week but the snow has pushed that to Monday, January 27th.
This Sunday however, Miller and Martinez will be selling their barbacoa from a food cart outside Mexican bakery Los Rosa’s at 8th and Watkins. The cart will open at 7 a.m. and will be serving till everything is sold out.

The Passyunk Post has the details on South Philly Barbacoa, a couple days a week Mexican pit barbecue proposed for 1002 Watkins Street in South Philadelphia. Benjamin Miller would be the owner and operator. Miller currently works in the kitchen at Kanella and has worked for Amis in the past.
