Step Backwards for Barbecue

Craig LaBan lowered LaBoom on a trio of barbecue spots in his review of Baby Blues this week. It wasn’t enough to nail the University City barbecue joint, he also sliced into Famous Dave’s BBQ Shack and Fergie’s new barbecue menu.

It’s hard to get past disappointing pork ribs, though, at a barbecue joint. And while I’ve had worse recently (see Famous Dave’s above), both the baby backs and the bigger “Memphis”-style ribs left much to be desired, including an overly saucy sweet glaze and lack of dusty rub that left my pal, a Memphis-born ringer, singing the blues.

Baby Blues Blasted

Adam Erace visits University City’s Baby Blues Barbecue and finds that the meat is fine but not much else.

[T]he pink-ringed meats that emerge from the 1-ton Southern Pride smoker in a cloud of applewood and hickory mist are the real stars of Baby Blues’ menu. Though the greasy ropes of pulled pork tasted left over from the weekend, the other cuts on the “Blue Devil” (that’s four meats and three sides) satisfied.

University City to Get Touted BBQ

Michael Klein reports that University City is getting a branch of Baby Blues, a BBQ place that comes highly recommended by trusted Foobooz operatives who live near the Venice, California location. They say what is so impressive is how good across the board the dishes are.

The University City location will be at the former Bubble House on Sansom Street. Opening is hoped for by the end of the year.
