Shoppist’s 25 Gifts of Christmas: Day 15

Xmas15

Now that the holidays are officially upon us, we here at Shoppist are in full gifting mode. Each day this month, we’ll unveil our 25 top gifts to buy in Philly this season. (Trust us: We’ve shopped everywhere to bring you the best of the best.)

We all have one: that co-worker who keeps you sane, makes you laugh, listens to you vent, and helps you brainstorm. I call them my OBFs, and I have several (most of whom, happily, I’ll stay friends with long after this job). So what to do when the holidays roll around? Thank your OBF with Three Potato Four’s milk bottle carafe, filled with her favorite candy. Bonus: Once the candy’s run out, she can fill it up at the water cooler. Way chicer than a Nalgene.

The Details: Milk bottle carafe, $24 at Three Potato Four, Media.

Give To: Your OBF (Office Best Friend).

Let the other guests bring bottles of wine and blocks of cheese to the holiday party. Step outside of the gift-giving box with a gift from one of Bucks County’s best hidden gems. Carousel Farm, an impossibly gorgeous lavender farm just outside of New Hope (about 45 minutes from Philly), sells the sweetest-smelling gifts you’ll find in the area. Our favorite is this gift set, which includes a lavender sachet (perfect for tucking between towels and sheets in the linen closet), lavender body cream, lavender soap and lavender-cucumber soap. It’s like giving a taste of Provence, without ever leaving the northeast.

The Details: Lavender cream gift set, $30 at Carousel Farm, Mechanicsville.

Give To: Your hostess.

Most toys and games out now are plastic, electronic, all bells and whistles and AA batteries, which makes finding hand-crafted wooden toys all the more refreshing. Philly-based company Mama May i, founded by mom-of-three Jessica Perkins,  makes smart, thoughtful, sensory-based toys for babies, toddlers and small children that get them engaged, keep their attention, and nurture development and imagination. The Make A Match game—a pouch of small wood disks printed with different hand-drawn illustrations (we’re fans of the non-cheesy Philly version, naturally—recalls the old-school Memory game, and we’re obsessed. Original hand-drawn illustrations in the 50-piece Philly set include the Liberty Bell, Art Museum, Independence Hall, a soft pretzel, Reading Terminal Market, Ben Franklin, City Hall, a cheesesteak and Boathouse Row. Oh, and SEPTA. Because it’s never too early to prepare your children for the harsh realities of adulthood.

The Details: Mama May i ‘Make A Match Philadelphia’ game, $27 at mamamayishop.com.

Give To: Your preschooler.

Because your boyfriend most definitely does not want another tie, there’s this: a rugged, manly-man cocktail kit, a collab between Old City mainstay Art In The Age and stellar outdoor gear company Poler. The collection of goods comes housed in a super-sturdy Poler Excursion pack (which opens up all the way for roomy, compartmentalized storage) and includes an AITA tee, Stanley camp flask, two enamelware mugs, Scout notebook, woven patch, pen, a Mason shaker and Pok Pok drinking vinegar (which our friends over at Foobooz say is absolutely essential for a good drink). Pitching the tent? That’s up to you.

We’ve been fans of Philly-based J. Rudy Lewis’s work for a long time. His hand-forged metal cuffs—some wrapped, corset-like, with leather—are earthy perfection, and totally unlike jewelry we’ve seen before. But our new favorite piece is his cast whale wishbone necklace, which comes on a steel chain (shown), hand-wrapped silk cord, or (for $10 more) a hand-dyed thick leather strap with a quote from Patti Smith, a prayer she says before live performances: “I’d like to thank God I’m alive.” We’ll take one of each, please.

The Details: Handcrafted cast whale wishbone necklace, $159 at J. Rudy : exo.

Give To: Your best friend.

First things first: That bulldog isn’t for sale. And neither, sadly, is Duke, the caramel-colored English bulldog who’s the official mascot of Duke & Winston, the NoLibs-based clothing line known for its sharp polos and soft graphic tees. Naturally, you can’t have a pup mascot without creating a line that nods to him: Enter the Tophat hoodies, ridiculously cozy fleece “sweatshirts” that feature a kangaroo pocket (unnecessary, perhaps, but adorable) and an opening on the back for a leash. Score one online, at the NoLibs showroom, or at the D&W pop-up shop in Bryn Mawr (it’s open until January 8th). Your furry best friend will thank you. Or pee on your carpet. (With excitement.)

The Details: Tophat dog hoodie, $32 at Duke & Winston, Northern Liberties and Bryn Mawr.

Give To: Fido.

Holographic accessories are trending right now … which means they’ll most likely be on their way out soon. What we’ll never tire of, though, is Hammitt’s gorgeous bag, which reminds us of the most posh oil slick ever. And it’s practical, too: There’s a pocket to stash your cell phone on the exterior back of the bag. No more rooting through cavernous carryalls to find your phone! Now that’s a true gift.

The Details: Hammitt metallic bag, $195 at Joan Shepp, Center City.

Give To: Your best friend.

Diamond studs are a tad yawn-worthy. For a cooler spin on the basic bauble, we suggest heading to Bario-Neal, the adorable Bella Vista workshop/store that turns out gorgeous pieces (both custom and ready-to-wear) handcrafted from ethically sourced stones and reclaimed precious metals. The Aster Stone earrings are cast from an aster flower, with a small diamond center. Since each pair is made to order (you can choose 14-karat white, yellow or rose gold), you’ll need to jump on this quickly; call for a lead-time estimate. But for earrings like these, we think it’s worth the wait.

The Details: Aster Stone earrings, $270 at Bario-Neal, 700 South 6th Street, Bella Vista.

Give To: Your girlfriend/wife.

Issa Dixon’s line of essentials oils—each hand-crafted, distilled and blended in small batches in her Narberth home—is made from the highest quality plant materials (most from organic and local growers), and it shows. The oils are some of the best-smelling we’ve tried, and when applied to pulse points—a drop behind the ears, wrists and knees—you feel instantly calmed, a bit more serene, and ready to take on the day. (Full disclosure: We keep these in our desk drawers for insta-relaxation.)

The Details: Hollow & Ridge essential oils 3-pack, $95 at hollowandridge.com, and at The Parlour, 1339 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown.

Give To: Mom.
