Though we welcome summer with open arms, there’s no denying our favorite season introduces a host of hair challenges. Rather than fuss with dry, brittle — or worse, poofy — hair, segue into summer with luxe, bouncy locks.

To weigh in on the best ways to combat warm-weather hair woes and school us in the season’s hottest styles, we chatted with Paul Labrecque, creative director of The Rittenhouse Spa & Club – Hair by Paul Labrecque. Here’s your comprehensive guide for getting hair summer-ready. (Psst: scroll to the bottom of the post to enter to win a $1,000 gift card to The Rittenhouse Spa & Club!)

Get Your Hair in Tip-Top Shape:

  • Always rinse salt and chlorine out of your hair as soon as you can. This will make for soft, supple hair.
  • Keep your summer look simple. If you have waves, embrace ‘em, or humidity will make you wish you had.
  • Condition, condition, condition. Shampoo only when dirty. If you choose to rinse your hair, use a little conditioner to pop it back in shape.

What to Know Before You Go:

  • Use your stylist as a resource. Talk to them about your lifestyle, affordability and capability when it comes to doing your own hair. Labrecque explains, “I love when a client gives me free range to create a look that works best for their face shape and coloring. Selecting a look with unfeasible upkeep that is too hard to style at home will just ultimately lead to disappointment.”
  • Remember: stylists can make anything look easy. You’ll want to be sure you can style your new look on your own.

Trends to Follow Now:

  • For men, Labrecque says, “We are seeing a more well-kept, groomed facial hair look Longer hairstyles with severe side parts are also on trend for guys.”
  • Give an undercut a go. Let your stylist shave an artful design on the under-half of your hair. That way, you can wear it up to reveal a hip, fresh pattern, or down to camouflage it.
  • Underlights are on-trend, too. “Underlighting allows the client to have blonde worked into their roots while keeping the color away from the part and very front,” says Labrecque. “This allows for a subtle grow out and less upkeep.”
  • Good news: pastels and rainbows hues continue to reign. Labrecque explains, “To accomplish this look, the hair must be pre-bleached then have the shade enhanced subtlety.”
