Dads are notoriously hard to shop for – that’s why most of us end up settling for neckties and grilling gear whenever his day rolls around. But if you really want to wow the man of honor this Father’s Day, plan a trip to Maryland for activities that are all about him and his favorite hobbies. Whether he’s a baseball fan or art lover, you can find whatever floats dad’s boat in Frederick County (and prove to your siblings once and for all that you are the favorite child.)

If your dad is a sports fan…

Take him out to a ball game at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium to watch the Frederick Keys baseball team, a 2011 Division title winner for the Carolina League. This Father’s Day, June 18, the Keys will be playing the Lynchburg Hillcats at 2 p.m. The Class A Advanced affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles is named after Star Spangled Banner author Francis Scott Key, whose gravesite at Mount Olivet Cemetery is within sight of the stadium. Grab a hot dog and take in the fireworks after the game. General admission tickets are $10; senior tickets are $7.

If he’s a craft beer enthusiast…

Check out Frederick’s best places for local craft beer, including the Monocacy Brewing Company. Take a tour and see what’s on tap in the tasting room for samples of legendary local brews like Riot Rye, Brewtus and H.L. Rex. With all beers brewed and packaged in historic Frederick, you and Dad can get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the creation and bottling of craft beers.

If he loves to golf…

Get him out on the green at one of the many championship golf courses in the area. In the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains, the Musket Ridge Golf Club has two nines – the Blue and the Ridge – that move uphill and downhill, with four sets of tee boxes to choose from. While it’s challenging for professional golfers and amateurs alike, the scenic views of mountains and greenery are ideal for everyone.

If he appreciates the arts…

This designated Arts & Entertainment district is perfect. Stop by the award-winning Delaplaine Arts Center with eight galleries featuring artwork by both regional and national artists in a historic mill along Carroll Creek Park. Catch a movie at the Frederick Film Festival, returning to the Weinberg Center for the Arts on June 23, to support local filmmakers and cinematographers. For live, theatrical and musical performances, visit the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, Fredericktowne Players or the Other Voices Theatre for a show.

If he’s a history buff…

Visit one of the many museums in the area, starting with the Museum of Frederick County History. Explore 300 years of history via exhibits and hands-on activities, then visit the beautiful onsite gardens. For an in-depth look at the “War Between the States,” head to the National Museum of Civil War and Medicine to discover how soldiers and surgeons survived in tumultuous wartime before the existence of modern medicine. The Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is also a sight to see as one of the earliest known homes in Frederick. The German colonial stone house dates back to 1758.
