Sometimes the best beauty products can be found in the most unexpected places (West Philly’s International Food and Spices, South Philly’s Fante’s). So when we came across this great article breaking down the best finds at Trader Joe’s — think yummy Coconut Body Butter and anti-aging Nourish Antioxidant Facial Serum — we decided to do some digging of our own. Here, Philly Mag’s discerning editors share their favorite go-to beauty buys from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

Be Well Philly assistant editor Adjua Fisher (who knows her way around both grocery stores better than anyone else we know) swears by Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Pure Castile Soap (which you can find at both Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s). Another editor is a fan of Trader Joe’s Cotton Unscented Deodorant in the winter (“because it has no aluminum”). The Trader Joe’s Balanced Moisturizing Nourish Spa Shampoo is also editor-approved and a safe, affordable option for color-treated hair (though a male editor with natural, non-dyed locks also swears by it!).

In my medicine cabinet, you’ll find a plethora of wallet-friendly finds. In order to prevent clogged pores —an issue that plagues most of us in the summer — I switch between Trader Joe’s Spa 100 percent Australian Tree Tea Oil and Dessert Essence Tea Tree Oil  (available at Whole Foods). Warning: This antiseptic really stings, so be sure to keep it far away from your eyes. Whole Foods also carries Weleda Skin Food, which — as the name suggests — feeds dry, flaky skin.

Lastly, consider ingredients in your  kitchen cabinet. Use Trader Joe’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil as a makeup remover (and, fine, to sauté your veggies, too). Now, who’s ready to compete in Supermarket Sweep?
