It’s a stylish person’s job never to be satisfied with how things come. All jeans must be original re-hemmed to precise lengths. All handbags must come from an impossible-to-endure waiting list, and all haircuts must be resemble the cuts everyone else has … next year. At home: Same thing. If your upholstery resembles your neighbor’s, if your cabinets clearly come from a box, well, then you, dearest, are merely a stylish person in training (that’s SPIT to you).

Ditto for lampshades. A design-ista would never settle for the boring white model that comes from the store, and she’d rather turn in her hand-hooked-by-Jonathan-Adler rug than use a patterned model that obviously came from a store within the Kingdom of Prussia. Instead, she’d head to Center City’s Philadelphia Home Art Garden (that’s PHAG to you) and order up one of hundreds of newly available custom shades that she knows no one has. After all, the prettier the lampshade, the better it’ll look on her head, after she’s had one too many of her signature, custom-blended cocktails …

Shades from $34.50.
