Homegrown: Natural Beauty

In this town’s surging sea of indie jewelry makers, Zivile Pupinyte and her tactile creations stand out. The 26-year-old Lithuanian-born beauty — until recently a server at Center City’s Caribou Café — turns sliced coconut hulls, black lava orbs, glossy conch shells and ruggedly hewn crystals into necklaces, bracelets and earrings that are organic but not crunchy, sculptural but not weighty, asymmetrical but balanced.

She prefers designing bespoke pieces: “I tell new ­clients: Don’t tell me anything. Just let me see you, and I will start working,” she says. As for her ready-made: The line is a natural fit for the glass cases of haute-hipster shops such as at Northern Liberties’ Conspiracy boutique, ­Closet Fever, and Gallery 908 at Philadelphia Glass Works.

Pupinyte has planned a fashion show of her work at Fabric Row’s Bus Stop Boutique on the evening of September 19th. Music will be performed by DJ Bill Gat, who, this being ­Philadelphia, is the designer’s husband.
