Profile

The cheesesteaks at this iconic, 63-year-old, Miss America- (and George Foreman-) photo-plastered corner luncheonette are not Philly cheesesteaks. They may resemble the ones you’d find at Tony Luke’s et al., but they are, through and through, property of A.C.—not PA. Just ask your waitress, or the guy taking your phone-in order, or the woman in the housedress who’s pushing anxious future diners out of the orange-vinyl-booth-lined eating area. Getting smushed while waiting to get in is a White House tradition. If you’re lucky in line, you’ll get a free whiff of just-baked rolls when a guy from Formica Brothers Bakery across the street arrives with a brown-paper-bagged delivery. In summer, when the tomatoes are ripest, there’s no going wrong with a cold hoagie layered with Genoa salami, capicola ham, coteghino and provolone. No matter when, the meatballs are sublimely yummy carniv-orbs, the egg-and-peppers will cure what ails ya, and the ‘steaks just might make you rethink your hometown allegiance.
