Fluorescent purple lights and neon palms guide hungry diners to a festive space beneath a Latin dance hall, located at the edge of North Philadelphia’s barrio. Inside, a jukebox plays the latest Latino pop tunes, and the Spanish-speaking waitstaff gently points newcomers to house specialties: fried green plantains, marinated octopus, platters piled high with yellow rice, pinto beans, steak, arepas (Colombian corn patties), avocado, thick slices of maduros (sweet plantains)—and fried eggs. Though the selection of tropical fruit smoothies is tempting, the giant pitchers of fruity sangria do a better job of washing down these seriously huge meals.
