Profile

One of Old City’s few remaining secrets is this petite, pale pink bakery across the street from the Betsy Ross house, open Tuesday to Saturday. In the late afternoon, patrons drift up to the service window for cookies (oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, sugar, and our favorite, fresh ginger with chocolate chunks), bars (lemon, chocolate toffee) and, of course, light-crusted four-inch tarts. The repertoire of self-taught baker Teresa Wall includes heirloom apple, cranberry-walnut, pear and cranberry with ginger/brown butter custard, and sweet potato/pecan.

I drive from Boston to Virginia regularly. A friend gave me a tip, “Add an hour to your ten hour drive, turn left at Philly, and get some lemon bars from a little shop on Arch Street. It was well worth the it. I’ll start early next time so I can make it Teresa’s shop and stock up. Everyone raves about her lemon bars. Try something else, everything is excellent. One would not think such luxurious delights would be found in that funny little pink building, but they are there, I assure you.

I could write a very long, detailed review on Tartes b/c quite frankly I've living a block from the shop I have had the privledge if tasting many of Teresa wall's masterpieces. However, I think this little nugget of information will get the point across on how incredible this bakery is: my fiance and I chose to have an autumn wedding for one reason and one reason only: so Teresa's Pumpkin Spice cake could be our wedding cake.
