Talula's Table
102 West State Street
Kennett Square, PA 19348
Bryan Sikora and Aimee Olexy seem very happy in their welcoming new prepared-food market in downtown Kennett Square. Hopefully, the couple that gave us five years at the seminal BYOB Django will forgive their Philadelphia following for being less than thrilled about that. The city craves this type of easygoing space. A farmhouse table is the centerpiece, and chatting patrons settle there to snack on house-baked bread and a cheese from the selection Aimee oversees with the same enthusiasm she brought to the Django cheese plate. The shelves are sparse yet pretty with displays of Dalla Costa pastas and Catalonian honey, but the refrigerators are stocked-full of Bryan's better-than-homemade meals: chicken potpie, mushroom ravioli, smoked tomato sauce.

My wife and I have been twice. I like food that stuns me - dishes that make me slow my chewing so I can savor every morsel - and Talula's delivers. Not a single dish doesn't push the boundaries of 'the norm' (e.g. you've never had baked beans like this). However, never is there a dish that is 'too much' - it's astonishing how there's always a perfect balance, starting from amuse bouche to the cheese and dessert. We haven't yet dined at a Philly restaurant (e.g. vetri, amada) who can match the food (i.e. we moved here after Django changed owners). Talula's service is also fantastic. Some might give it a lower 'decor' score, but I believe that the decor is intentionally as it is precisely so you can better focus on food and friends. So if you're idea of 'great' is stephen starr - go somewhere else.
