In 1983, Kevin and Janet Meeker opened Philadelphia Fish & Company, a place that introduced us to mako shark and tuna served rare. Through 26 years, they’ve watched trendy eateries come and go, and they knew when it was time to revamp. And so was born Q, a place with straightforward Southern classics — pulled pork, chicken, ribs — as well as Mexican dishes like tacos and burritos. We wish the meats had more of the smoky flavor of finger-licking ’cue, and that side dishes were more delicate (although the collards were great). But this place’s cheap eats are a good way to get an Old City night started. Insider tip: There are more than 60 tequilas here. Shoot back a sampling, or try one in a drink.

The last time I got out during restaurant week I was treated to the classy and delicious Philadelphia Fish Co. This year I was able to get out their new establishment Q. The atmosphere is a standard pub or bar vibe, nothing too trendy or stylish. The food was decent, but for the area it was very well priced. We started out with chips and guac. The chips looked homemade- kinda salty and greasy in a good way. Unfortunately the chips were cold and a few tasted stale. The guac was chunky and very fresh tasting. I loved it! The smoke house burger was a good classic bar burger. There are also have some other great burger options- kona burger or even bunless. The mac and cheese was creamy, but not cheesey. It did come topped with a very nice golden brown bread crumb top. I opted for the Q burrito, which was stuffed with, pulled pork, collard greens and baked beans. I will say the pork was good, but I wanted more spice. The lack of condiments (hot sauce please!) was annoying. We also had to ask for utensils and napkins. Overall I miss the Fish Co. If you are looking for just a bar with grub slightly away from the norm, this is the spot. The variety of margaritas is amazing - ginger pear or basil. If you are looking for a dinner out, skip it.
