When he was a young boy living on the French Riviera, Patrice Rames would tie sardines in fishnetting and use them as bait to catch squid, which his mother would stuff with spinach, rice, pork and Italian sausage, and then roast. That preparation of squid is on the menu at the vast Patou, which Rames opened to evoke the tastes and sights of a youth lived along the Mediterranean—and gave his childhood nickname. The open kitchen also features a lobster tank; its residents might find their way to the grill, to the rotisserie, paired with arugula as a topping for pizza, and into the inevitable bouillabaisse as well.

My sister and I went here and I must say we were both surprised. The lighting was a little dark but the food for me was scrumptious. My sister, the aspiring cook, found the veggies a little too al dente. The meal is definitely worth repeating and the deserts were delicious.

Excellent, imaginative, varied French menu, good wine list, knowledgeable servers, and the owner-chef, Patrice Rames, is eminently gracious and knowledgeable. He knows food, and cares about guests' happiness. The menu always has a mix of well-prepared standards (Steak a` poivre) and more adventsome items, like his ever-chaging seafood entrees. And the prices (especially if you get the daily prix fixe special) are quite good. It is a quietly-dramatic looking place, decorated simply in the blue and white of the Mediterranean. The menu is a bit more adventuresome than that at his equally good Bistro St. Tropez, which offers a fabulous view of the striking new Cira Center and the Schuylkill. If you are a regular, join Fidelite` (good for both restaurants) to rack up points, which give you money off!
