It’s no surprise that even with a menu full of delicious Italian-American dishes like osso buco and veal saltimbuca, it’s the pizzas at this upscale Italian-American restaurant that keep showing up on customers’ plates. Appropriate, too, that La Scala’s lives in Philly’s historic district, because the pies—though not topped with Ben Franklin’s wig or shards of sautéed Liberty Bell—are classic Neapolitans with sauce \just like Grandmom used to make.\ Impressive toppings include clams, bacon, eggplant and ricotta, but it’s still the crushed plum tomato sauce that accounts for each pizza’s rich flavor.
