If you’ve had a Schmitter at Citizens Bank Park or the Linc and assumed it was named after Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, consider visiting its ancestral home, a friendly, smoke-free bar in Chestnut Hill run by the same family for more than 80 years. The Schmitter—a cheesesteak on a kaiser roll with extra cheese, fried onions, grilled salami, tomato, and secret house dressing—got its name from a regular who always drank Schmidt’s beer; his preferred sandwich became known as the Schmitter.
