Profile

The show — a long line of people clogging the aisle of Reading Terminal, to watch as the meaty brisket is carefully sliced on the bias — and the ample sandwiches, like the necessarily messy Reuben piled with corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese, are almost two lunches’ worth of food. Don't miss the Dr. Brown’s sodas in celery and black cherry.

I've tried Hershel's twice and after much anticipation for a great sandwich I was extremely disappointed. Both their corned beef and pastrami were tough and flavorless. At least they're in Reading Terminal Market so you can eat elsewhere.

I'm a New Yorker, and we have nothing that is comparable to Hershel's. Their pastrami is so succulent, tender and juicy with the perfect spice and flavor. It's just absurd. You can tell it's going to be good when it's glistening on the chopping board right in front of you. I have made the trip to Philly with friends just for their sandwiches. Plus it's only $9 for probably the highest quality sandwich you'll ever get. I can't believe cheesesteaks are what Philly is known for with a place like Hershel's! I hope they open up in New York!
