Everyone talks about sweet sauce versus savory sauce—about the sharpness of oregano, the vegetable sweetness of San Marzano tomatoes and the differing methods of preparation that result in sauces which, let’s be honest, are never all that different from one another. They compete on a narrow slice of the spectrum. But not Franzone’s. If you like a sweet sauce, this is the place to go because the sauce at Franzone’s is as unlike the sauce anywhere else in the region as a scallop is to a marshmallow. Honest to god, it tastes like the cooks behind the line at this fast-moving pizza machine just dump in sugar by the bucket full. And yet somehow it never tastes too sweet or too strange and, after a slice or two or three, becomes as addictive as any truly new experience can be.

We have been taking friends to Franzone's for a very long time. They always rave about the pizza. Beyond pizza, Franzone's makes an excellent stromboli (cheese, pepperoni and spinach are our favorites), an awesome white pizza and Sicilian. The pasta dishes with meatballs and sauce are terrific, and come with a simple but delicious salad that they have been making the same way for decades. Say "Hi" to Sam behind the counter. Franzone's has been a mainstay of Bridgeport and Norristown alike for a looong time and now everyone in the area can find out why. Stop by for a slice and a beer and come back often! Way to go Franzone's! Posted by Mary-Beth: Jul. July 5th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
