Built in 1710 as a three-story residence in small-town Hunterdon County, Colligan’s Stockton Inn was converted into a tavern later that century. The Stockton had its heyday in the 1930s, when it was frequented by Algonquin Round Tablers fleeing Manhattan and became a hangout during the 1935 trial that convicted Bruno Hauptmann of the Lindbergh-baby kidnapping. Now the bar is frequented by locals, and the restaurant, owned by Fred and Janet Strackhouse, offers an international menu that includes dishes like pork osso buco with vegetable risotto and sesame-crusted salmon with a ginger soy reduction. In warm weather, have a drink at the outdoor garden bar, which sits alongside two waterfalls.
