What to Drink Tonight: Sauvignon Blanc Montes 2007 “Leyda Vineyard” Chile

Chile has long been perceived as a source of great red wines, but as this up-and-coming wine country hits its stride, there has been a marked improvement in the quality of its whites. Leyda Vineyard’s vibrant sauvignon blanc (Chairman’s Selection, $9.99) falls midway in style between the plump melon-y character found in California versions and the grapefruit-y tang associated with New Zealand.

Try this crisp and refreshing white wine with tart and savory foods — avoid sugary sauces that will make it seem thin and sour. Best bets include salads and ceviches; cold appetizers like shrimp cocktail; and sauces with herbal flavors, like pesto or cilantro.
