Dining on the Cheap: Entrées Under $20

Entrée prices are pretty steep, even at budget-friendly BYOBs. Are entrées under $20 on the dining-out endangered species list? Not at Nicholas, a new cozy 30-seater in Pennsport, which offers a full menu of generously portioned dishes — and not one of them costs more than $20. Go for the Asian-tinged steak, marinated in miso and served with enoki mushrooms, or try the homey pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes. The menu changes weekly, but it tends to mix the familiar with the exotic. Also recommended: the huge mussels appetizer (which costs a mere $8), though it won’t leave you with much room for the rest of your meal.

This weekend hubby and I are celebrating our anniversay so we decided to dine out all weekend. Instead of our usual center city favorite restaurants I suggested we try something local in South Philly so I came up with Nicholas. It was cozy and quiet and I loved the ambiance. Their Crate & Barrel type decor was very comfortable and the hostess/waitress was very nice. My husband had the pork chop (which was more like a ham staek) and I ordered the rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection! Although our entree's were tasty we could have feasted off the appetizers and would have been just as happy. My husband Sam was raving about the mussels and the calamari & linguini was the best I ever tasted. The chef came out to greet us which is always a plus to me. To top everything off they are BYOB! We had no room for the "Better than Sex" chocolate cake, but we must return for that! What could be better than sex??? LOL Over all it was a nice experience and we must do this again.
