Critic's Notebook: You Say Tomato, I Say Dessert

By JOY MANNING

I recently blogged about the sun gold tomato, whose sweet tomato flavor is unparalleled. The sweetness is so sweet, in fact, that it got me thinking about the idea of tomatoes as dessert. And I guess it isn’t just me who has had this notion.

Recently, I watched an episode of the new Food Network show The Cooking Loft, where chef Alex Guarnaschelli made a sweet stuffed tomato dessert, complete with ice cream. Just a few days later, I wandered into Capogiro, where a red heirloom tomato flavor was being scooped. I tried it with the sea salt and basil flavors. The trio tasted like a fresh tomato salad reborn as a luscious dessert.
