Will Philadelphia join New York City in passing a law that requires fast food outlets to post nutrition information — including calorie counts — right on their menus? We will if City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown gets her way. A bill she introduced earlier this year requiring the labeling has been picking up steam lately. Which may soon make it hard to order that seemingly innocent peanut butter and jelly sandwich — banking in at a not-so-innocent 895 calories — from Potbelly. I mean, could you so carelessly gulp down that yummy Five Guy’s bacon cheeseburger and regular fries if you knew it would set you back a whooping 1,300 calories?

I think the labeling could help people be more aware of exactly what — or how much — they’re eating, but some business owners think it will reduce sales. What do you think, are these labels TMI or just healthy legislation?

COMMENT:
I won't say if the lables are good good or bad, but I will say they influence decisions. I was in New York over the summer and went into Starbucks for breakfast. Everyone in my group made their selection based on the nutrition information provided. Perhaps the labelling can inspire the vendors to create more healthy and appealing alternatives.
