First Bite: Sushi Spot Aki

No doubt Market East residents were happy to see another sushi joint open in the old Aoi space. Although new Aki, with its red velvet booths and sleek black accents, may feel more nightclub than neighborhood sushi spot, it manages to play both roles relatively well.

The full-service bar has an impressive sake selection and a variety of specialty cocktails (they tend toward the sweet). And from the kitchen, menu highlights include a lightly battered, virtually greaseless veggie tempura appetizer (think asparagus spears and red and green bell peppers), and the Green Peace roll, an inventive combo of sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus, avocado and kiwi. Skip the teriyaki; the too-sweet sauce didn’t much help the overcooked, rubbery filets in the salmon version.

Here's an insider tip: Deals abound. There’s a $8.50 lunch special — two rolls and soup or salad — and, like its predecessor, all-you-can-eat sushi on Sundays and Wednesdays for $24.95.

1210 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107; 215-985-1838.

Tucked away in a Cherry Hill strip mall, next to the Viennese Cafe, Oh, Yoko offers the most dynamic and consistently fresh sushi menu in South Jersey or Philadelphia. The wasabi fries are amazing. The Tokyo Maki roll with spicy yellowtail is beyond delicious. And since it is family-run, the atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable as you listen to Beatles tunes and watch fish swim in the ocean on a plasma TV.

Oh My...Umai!

Every now & then one is pleasantly surprised to find a real winner in the burbs. Umai is a little gem tucked away in Lansdale. Chef Rae, is both skilled and accommodating, as is his right hand Paul. Exceptionally fresh and high quality premium Scottish salmon, Aji, Uni and many well crafted rolls. Cooked specialties are fine, but this is a place for sashimi and sushi. Many little treats for those sitting at the bar. Beats anything else we have tried on the East coast and puts Morimoto to shame. Advance reservations allow Rae to gauge the amount of fish he needs to order, and garner a five percent discount. He also does an outrageous Omekase
