The Point Breeze pop-up beer garden has had a lot of ups and downs this summer. Philadelphia’s Licenses & Inspections department shut it down in July, saying the property isn’t zoned to be used as a beer garden. A few days later, a judge ordered that it could reopen, but shortly thereafter it was forced to close again, and then it was soon allowed to, yup, reopen.
The beer garden’s roller-coaster season is ending on a high note for its proprietor: Martin O’Malley, the Democratic presidential candidate and former governor of Maryland, is holding a fundraiser at the pop-up on September 10th. Tickets for the event range from $30 for students to $1,000 for “chairs.” Read more »
John Longacre, the man behind South Philadelphia Tap Room, American Sardine Bar and Brew is opening a beer garden at Point Breeze Avenue and Tasker Street. The Point Breeze Pop-Up is opening on Thursday, May 21st and running through Monday, September 7th. The pop-up will be open Thursday through Sunday. The garden, which will benefit Fair Food, will offer draft beer and cider, plus food from a rotating cast of food trucks.
The first events scheduled for the Point Breeze Pop-Up is SPTR’s Wheat Beer Fest. The event which is happening on Saturday, May 16th, will move to the pop-up location for this year’s tenth anniversary.
In case you missed The Hammer of Glory (HOG) pub crawl in March, you can join the #HOGTour in South Philly on Thursday, Apr. 30.
The crawl will be led by Grand Marshal Curt Decker of the currently relocating Nodding Head Brewery (leading a South Philly bar crawl, hmmmmm), and will travel around East Passyunk Avenue from 6-10pm, beginning at Taproom on 19th. Other stops include South Philadelphia Tap Room, Pub on Passyunk East, and Devil’s Den, “plus craft beer specials and other surprises along the way at the whim of The HOG.
If you can't make this one, have no fear: there is one more crawl on Thursday, May 28 in the Fishtown/ Northern Liberties neighborhood (which is the night before Philly Beer Week officially begins on Friday, May 29.)
Check out more about Philly Beer Week here.
