While we were on our year-end break the hospitality industry saw several closures and changes.
The biggest news is that Il Pittore will close after service on Saturday, January 9th. The restaurant has been a partnership between Stephen Starr and Starr’s former culinary director, Chris Painter. The restaurant has received critical acclaim since its 2011 opening and was recently included in Philadelphia magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2016. According to Alex Tewfik of Eater, Painter is planning to leave the Starr universe and to go it alone. As for the Il Pittore space, which was formerly Noble, Eater says plans are already in motion to reconceptualize the space.

Every Tuesday for the past few weeks chef Alex Boonphaya, owner of the Circles Thai mini-chain, has been hosting a “Hog Thai’d” pig roast at his newest restaurant on South Street.
Well, we tried it – and the pig meat was as juicy and tender as we thought it would be.
Each week Boonphaya gets a fresh pig from D’Artagnan, marinates it overnight in Thai herbs and spices, then roasts it and serves it with rice, bao buns, tamarind chili sauce and steamed vegetables including broccoli, carrots and bok choy for $17 per person.
All good, right? Well next Tuesday, Dec. 15, Boonphaya has scheduled a special “Social Circles” event, meaning that guests get to come and pig-out for free – literally.

The heat is ON on Thursday July 16th at Circles Thai.
Here’s the deal: chef Alex Boonphaya is hosting a 5-course Thai Tapout dinner, and he’s so confident that his dishes are too spicy to endure that he’s buying dinner for anybody who finishes the full five course meal. Winners who “beat the heat” will also receive a complimentary t-shirt.
It’ll work like this. Dinner costs $45, but can be made progressively cheaper by finishing the spicier courses. The first course is the most mild (4/10) and the last is the spiciest (10/10). If you make it through three, you pay $30. If you make it through four, you pay $20. If you attempt the fifth, you pay $10, and it’s free if you finish every last bite. Be warned: the fifth course features a ghost pepper concentrate–which is just crazy because concentrating the world’s hottest pepper into one fiery paste sounds just ridiculously dangerous.
But also kind of cool.
