Into the Woods: Lovely, Secluded Penn Valley Colonial for Sale

featured image

This three-story colonial may be made of stone, but both outside and inside of the house, it’s all about wood. First, the outdoors: In the front, the home has a landscaped lawn and slate path. But around the home, trees grow wonderfully tall, making the enclosed patio seem like a tent pitched in the middle of the woods. Truly the best of both worlds.

Indoors, there are bright hardwood floors, white wood built-ins, molding aplenty, a wood-grain refrigerator facade, and a wooden jewel box of a room that elevates wood paneling (if you can even call it that) to an art form.

Burch Family Puts Linden Hall on the Market for $24.5M in Time for US Open

linden hall

When Robert Burch’s family moved to Gladwyne in 1999, having paid $9.3 million for an estate at 1543 Monk Road, they’d been living on a huge farm. As a result, the property–once owned by the Campbell Soup Dorrance dynasty–gradually took on more rustic aspects–chickens, for instance, and son Roby’s horseback commute to school each day (chronicled in 2010 in the Inquirer). According to the first issue of Grays Lane magazine, Roby even drives a John Deere tractor in the Gladwyne Memorial Day Parade.

But make no mistake: Since it was designed and built by Edmund Gilchrist in 1929, the 50-plus-acre estate has remained very much the same: a village of buildings meant to look like Normandy and anchored by a 14,000-square-foot, 20-room manor home.

Farmhouse Friday: Make Hay While the Sun Shines. No, Really.

farmhouse friday

This beautiful 94-plus acre (!) property is primarily used right now for haymaking. Being city folk here at Property, we’re a bit ashamed to admit that, um, we don’t really know what that involves. But even for those who don’t make hay, there’s so much to love here, in particular for equestrians. There’s a horse barn with 16 box stalls, an indoor arena and outdoor arena, a fenced pasture, an eight bay equipment shed and bank barn. There’s also a stream, called Middle Creek, that divides the property.

Property’s Morning Obsession: Outstanding Exemplar of Italianate Architecture in Montco

italianate for sale montgomery county

18 Mainland Road in Mainland, Pa., has a lot of hallmarks of Victorian Italianate architecture, with three stories, flat roof and the ornamental cornices and brackets typical of the style. The symmetry of the squared off windows, though not strictly adherent to the form as defined today, is rather satisfying and clean. The four-bedroom, three-bath house was built in 1855, not long after the Italianate style came to the U.S., having been inspired by Tuscan villas. If the idea of a Tuscan villa in Montgomery County appeals, read on.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if there were a superhero who was like the Lone Ranger or Zorro and who would ride in on a giant steed and save large companies from poor ethical decisions? For all we know, there could be–and he or she could be the owner of this house in Lower Gwynedd Township in Montgomery County.
