After more than a year on the market, a sale is pending on the almost 10,000-square-foot Anglo/Norman manor that was built for famed inventor and electric engineer Morris Leeds. It has ironwork by Samuel Yellin and was designed by architectural firm Mellor, Meigs and Howe, whose signature gestures can be seen in every room–from the mahogany beamed ceilings to the hand-carved stonework.

Though the Hersha Hotel chain bought the Rittenhouse Hotel more than a year ago, the visible rehab and renovation efforts are quite recent. Today, smartly dressed young men scurry around with swatches and new light fixtures appear on the wall, looking more Hotel Monaco than classic, staid Rittenhouse. This should be interesting.
There has been apprehension among the Rittenhousers that Hersha, which doesn’t have much five-star experience, wouldn’t retain the five-star designation. Then Lacroix panic briefly set in–without the five stars, would Lacroix stay? Not to worry: Hersha will keep the five stars and Lacroix will remain.
Apartments at Penn generally buys properties, rehabs them and rents them to students. But now that the Zoning Board and the Spruce Hill community have approved a mixed-use complex–31 apartments and 1,400 square feet of ground-floor retail–at 43rd and Sansom, it’s jumping into full-fledged development, and one that intentionally melds with the Wine & Spirits store slated for 43rd and Chestnut.
The Historical Commission meets on a regular basis, and it’s not exactly a hot ticket–there aren’t any scalpers outside. Yet on Friday the City of Philadelphia’s Chief Integrity Officer Joan Markman attended a meeting of the Commission on a day when it was discussing a project taking place two blocks from her house. Though she said she had no stake in the outcome either way, she was remarkably interested in the “process,” as she put it.

Jonathan Papelbon endeared himself to virtually 100 percent of the city’s residents when the former Red Sox was interviewed by Sports Illustrated last spring after getting picked up by the Phillies:
“Philadelphia has a cool feel to it, man. It’s a vibe that the city produces. It makes you feel like you are in Paris. I’ve never been to Paris, but I’ve seen it in a lot of movies. I think [Philadelphia] is going to be a great place to live.”

If ever a store were in need of expansion, it was Trader Joe’s–the location at 22nd and Market was so claustrophobic, it would have made Al Gore do his food shopping at Wal-Mart. You could only imagine all the hookups that were dashed by the tiny aisles. If she hadn’t been rammed from behind by that bitch in the Peruvian poncho, she could have said something to the Warby Parker guy contemplating soy vs. almond.
Commercial Property Executive teamed up with Nielsen to do research on retail real estate markets that show rapid recovery. It seems there’s a relationship between affluence and business creation, which Nielsen determined by stirring up a zip code stew of household liquid assets and percentage of businesses created.
