While you’ll find plenty of homes in Philadelphia’s hinterlands that tend to have an early American past, many of them have been reworked to remove the once-charming details that made them unique. Bucks County farmhouses, by and large, have been spared this fate even as they’ve been updated to reflect changing times and tastes. This week’s featured farmhouse is one of those Bucks County gems.

Situated on 1.9 acres in Doylestown Township’s Furlong section, this home has kept its Colonial log cabin heart beating even as additions and renovations have turned it into a much larger, more comfortable home with all the modern accoutrements.

The cherry-red front door opens up into the kitchen and breakfast room. Given a fresh update, this kitchen includes fabulous granite counter tops, oak cabinetry, an eat-in bar for three and a breakfast area. From the kitchen, you step straight into the wood-paneled dining room, with a fabulous wood-burning stone fireplace at the center.

Off the dining room to your right,is the living room. Not only are the wooden beams that hang from the ceiling original to the home, but so are the antique log and plaster walls, a common element seen in the earliest American homes. This room is complete with an elegant stone fireplace with stove inset, perfect for burning a fire during the cold winter months.

Heading out of the living room, you’ll walk straight into a high-ceilinged, spacious yet cozy great room that serves as a family room, second dining room and study all rolled into one. Complete with stunning pine floors, a wooden ceiling with wood beams, and lots of natural light from the room’s multiple windows, this family room has a large brick fireplace as its focal point and built-in bookshelves at one end.

Traveling upstairs, each of the four bedrooms is different in design, from wood paneling in one to wood flooring in another. The master provides a grand space, with large windows, and a great hearth, rounding out the home’s four fireplaces. The master bath showcases dual vanities along with a relaxing whirlpool tub. Two of the bedrooms feature built-in bookshelves surrounded by knotty pine paneling.

Finally, getting outside in the fresh air, a door from the addition in the rear leads to the large deck, the perfect entertaining space. From here you can take in views of not only the beautiful land but the historic red barn that makes this property a one-of-a-kind wonder as well.
