That House Out There: Into The Woods Outside Pottstown

Here's a striking contemporary home with plenty of personality tucked away in its own wooded retreat. A recent renovation brought this 1981 creation into the 21st century.

We’d have loved to feature this home in our “Farmhouse Friday” department, but there were a few problems with that.

First, there’s no farm. That’s not an insurmountable problem, as we’ve featured many farmhouses in decidedly urban settings.

But more important is this: It’s not a farmhouse. Instead, it’s a strikingly urbane contemporary home with just a touch of the rustic about it, enhanced by being set in the middle of a 10-acre wooded plot overlooking French Creek.

This recently renovated home is just the place for nature lovers who want their creature comforts too.

The showpiece of this home is the two-story-high great room. Its soaring vaulted ceiling makes it feel big as all outdoors and its greenhouse solarium extension brings the outdoors indoors in a big way. It also has a wood-burning fireplace to add a touch of intimacy and warmth.

The great room, dining area and kitchen all flow together into a single seamless space. The kitchen was recently renovated with the latest stylish features, and a wood-burning stove keeps the adjacent dining area warm and cozy. The dining area’s large windows let in lots of light as well as those great outdoor views.

Just off the dining area (part of which could be used as a den) is a spacious master suite with a large walk-in closet, built-in shelving, laundry facilities and its own deck. A second master suite or guest room with private deck and built-ins sits one-half level up from the main floor.

The upper-floor hallway is lit by clerestory windows that give it an exceptionally airy feel. Two comfortable bedrooms with updated tiled bathrooms bracket the ends of the hallway, part of which is a bridge over the home’s main entrance.

Speaking of bridges, you cross a handsome rustic one to reach the winding drive that leads to your sylvan retreat.
