Play action might be more successful if they actually ran the ball more…

  • Vick isnt the only QB who every struggles. Cleveland was a top defense last year and he struggled. While Jay Cutler went against the worst defense in the NFL last year GB
and week 1 and threw 4 picks and was sacked 7 times. No pass protection equals bad QB. Ask Tom Brady in superbowls vs Giants.

“We were in Cover-2, and Vick not being the tallest of quarterback, he
loses zone droppers occasionally,” Jackson told reporters after the
game. Makes a lot of sense. This is the third year with Michael. He hasn’t gotten taller. How about “putting him in better position to succeed?” Mike does a lot right. Let’s stick to that. I reject the inability to lead long sustained drive theory. He did it to win the first game.

thanks for taking a look at the numbers, sheil. great stuff, as always (and not because it confirms what i’ve been saying).

if you are looking at the percentages, they ran PA on about a third of his snaps. ok. but when you look at the raw numbers, 19 play action passes in a game where you only called around 20 runs is hard to explain.

you also point out that an inordinate amount of bad stuff happened on that third of his passes which were off play action. 2 INTs and his ONLY 2 sacks. i would not be surprised if opposing defenses have carte blanche to check to a Corner or Slot blitz to the backside of any run fake because THAT (going back to monte kiffin and the bucs when he was in ATL) is the way to neutralize the bootleg threat.

all the eagles would have to do to counter this (well, aside from not calling PA when we’re not showing any interest in running the ball) would be to pull a frontside blocker to the backside to set the edge. in fact, this is PRECISELY what clay harbor did on that 1st play from scrimmage in the 59 pt explosion against washington on MNF.

the coaches HAVE to give him some protection there. if they MUST play fake, do it off of the zone/read look out of the gun so vick can see any edge rushers encroaching from either side, and give him hot options (quick slant, quick out, seam) so that he can get the ball out quickly as a failsafe. you know, the way regular pro offenses work.
