Drinking
Fall Cocktails: OK, so fall doesn’t actually start until September 21st. Or is it the 22nd? Who knows? Anyway, one of my favorite new bars in Philadelphia, The Trestle Inn (yes, the place that used to be a skanky–though charming in its own way–nudie bar) just debuted its fall cocktail list, and I think there’s a Gidget there with my name on it. Maybe tonight, even. See you there? Details
Movie Openings
The Killers: This 1946 film was once described by the London Radio Times as “one of the most powerful and influential thrillers ever made,” and that still holds true today. An iconic example of the film noir genre, The Killers, based on the Hemingway short story, stars the late Burt Lancaster as an ex-boxer being chased by killers. Ava Gardner co-stars, and this is one to see on the big screen on 35mm, as opposed to Netflix. Screens Sunday at the Colonial.  Details

For Mike Birbiglia Fans: The comedian’s semi-autobiographical Sleepwalk with Me

A French The Big Chill: Little White Lies, a musical, at the Ritz

For Richard Gere Fans: Gere plays a big-time banker with plenty to hide in Arbitrage

Concerts
Madonna: In case you’re not a religious reader of my work on The Philly Post, first of all, shame on you. Second, check out my review of Madonna’s kickoff for her North American tour, which happened a couple of weeks ago at the Wells Fargo Center. And finally, if it piques your interest and if you happen to have a bunch of cash sitting around, check out her show this weekend at Boardwalk Hall. Details

As in Guns N’ Roses: Slash is at the House of Blues

I Totally Forgot About FDR Park: Lotus plays there this Saturday

That Balding, Bearded Guy From the Grammys: Bon Iver comes to the Mann

One of the Best Pop Bands Around: Don’t miss Florence and her Machine

Over Yonder at Union Transfer: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

STAGE
Live Arts/Fringe, Part II: I managed to catch three shows so far at the festival: Bang (last show tonight!), Red Eye to Havre de Grace (last show this Saturday!) and Pig Iron Theatre Company’s Zero Cost House (you have plenty of time). Go here to read my reviews of those shows (and to find out which one people were walking out of), and go here to find out about all the new shows still to come. It’s a great year for the festival, so be sure to get out there and see some stuff. And by all means, if you see something you love (or hate), I want to know! Details

But If You Need Something a Bit More “Normal”: Try out Love Story, The Musical at the Walnut Street Theater

FAMILY
Finding Nemo in 3D: I don’t know about you, but in my not-particularly-humble opinion, Finding Nemo is one of the best animated features of the 21st century. Whether you’ve seen it before or not, you should totally take the kids to the new 3D version that is coming out in theaters this Friday. I was skeptical when I heard that they were rereleasing it in 3D, thinking that they’d just slap a few 3D moments into the original film. But I saw a sneak preview last week and can tell you that they’ve actually taken the already masterful original and incorporated it in its entirety into the 3D film world, and it’s a great example of when 3D works in a world where so much of it does not. Go see it. Details
