It seems as if there are now more good Mexican offerings than Italian in South Philadelphia: the burritos at La Fonda, the shrimp à la Mexicana at Los Jalapeños, those great Mexican breakfast platters at Taqueria Veracruzana, the charming glass Mexican Coke bottles at La Lupe. But our favorite spot, the polished Molcajete Mixto, does it all. Bring a good bottle of tequila for the homemade margarita mix, and settle in with the ceviche del dia, huitlacoche empanadas, and any of the whole fish specials. Inexplicably, this restaurant is frequently empty — at least for now — so you’ll need to bring the party with you.
