Slow down — because you will nearly miss Hill House’s tiny roadside sign — and don’t be discouraged when you find yourself ascending a narrow, winding driveway thickly surrounded by trees. This nursery has a whopping 300 varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons — displayed, quite literally, in the backyard of owner Ted Stecki, a retired engineer for Lockheed Martin who’s run this business for the past 45 years as a hobby. In addition to propagating rare and unique varieties for plant societies and collectors, he is a vice-president of the American Rhododendron Society and regularly contributes to the Philadelphia Flower Show. Open April- November.
