PW Reader Ring: Kelsey & John!

Kelsey's ring!

Kelsey’s ring!

The couple: Kelsey Jershky and John Sargent, from Malvern.

The ring: My ring has a round center diamond surrounded by a diamond halo, set in white gold with a twisted diamond band. My uncle is a jeweler at a place called Harry’s Fine Jewelry in Huntingdon Beach, California, and because I am the only niece on that side of the family, he had told John that he had been saving this diamond for when it came time for me to get engaged.

I had sent John pictures of rings before that I liked, but John designed this ring on his own with my uncle. He set the diamond, and my aunt engraved it with John’s request: “JS to KJ 3-25-16.”

The proposal: March 27th this year was our two-year anniversary, but since that was Easter Sunday, we went into the city on the 25th to celebrate. We had plans to be “tourists” and just walk around Philadelphia that Friday night, and then go to dinner afterwards. During the week I had been thinking about something to do since walking around the city gets old after a while when you have done it before, so I came up with the idea to go up in the One Liberty Place observation deck that was just recently built.

When we first got up there, John and I immediately went over to the windows and admired the large Ben Franklin head up close. He then decided to go over to talk to a man that was taking pictures from the window. I did not think of this as anything unusual, since John is in sales and will go up and talk to anyone if he is interested in something, so I let him go and stayed at the window by myself taking my own pictures until he came back over.

We walked around a little bit more and then went to the window where the sun had come out from behind the cloud, so we were able to watch the sunset. It was a beautiful yellow and orange sky! John pulled me close and put his arm around me and said, “You have made me the happiest person alive and I love you more than anything in the world,” and at this point, he started digging into his shorts pockets and my heart dropped. “Will you do me the honor and spend the rest of our lives together? Will you marry me?” Of course I said yes, because I love this man more than anything in the world!

Little did I know, too, that the man that he had talked to earlier about his camera was our photographer that he had secretly set up. I was beyond excited and beyond surprised! I had absolutely no clue that this was coming, unlike all of my family and my best friends who had been keeping it a secret since November! The funny thing about our engagement is that I actually kind of set it up, and did not even know. Originally John was going to have written “Marry Me?” on our hotel bed in rose petals, but since I had the idea to go up to the observation deck during sunset, John took full advantage of that.

The band: My uncle has also designed a wedding band that will fit perfectly with my engagement ring when it comes time to walk down the aisle!
