Anne and Anthony were struggling to cut their cake and feed each other politely with their fancy, engraved wedding forks—their friends were laughing at them, which is what Anthony is reacting to, here—so they just decided to give up and feed themselves. Anne has quite a sweet tooth and had been looking forward to the cake all night, so she just decided to go ahead.
