While we consider ourselves to be pretty well-versed on which destinations make for the loveliest honeymoons, it’s the travel agents who book these trips every day who are the real experts on where you should spend your first married days—and why. That’s why when we stumbled upon this list of the top honeymoon spots for 2016—as chosen by five of the country’s top travel consultants—we knew we had to share it with you.

Better yet, we decided to consult local travel pro Jennifer Byrne of Malvern’s Tropical Travelers to get her take on what’s trending for the coming year—and she agreed that many of the agents’ suggestions are indeed what’s hot for 2016.

“There are some interesting spots in there and some tried and true ones, too,” she says. “I’m particularly interested in the fact that Thailand is in there twice—I feel it is an amazing location for honeymooners who want to see something culturally fascinating as well as experience a completely new and exciting destination.” (She does caution, though, that it’s necessary to find a travel consultant who fully understands the region and can make the best recommendations.)

As for the tried and true locations that are always a great option, Bryne seconds Riviera Maya, Italy and Hawaii. “These locations have been quite popular with honeymooners for years and rightly so. They can offer a great balance for couples who want romance, great food and wine, and sightseeing. Each is very different from the other and work for different people but all are wonderful destinations.”

In terms of the more general honeymoon trends Bryne is seeing, she says couples these days want to experience something unique without having to fly around the world (in this case she’ll recommend a place like Costa Rica, which has been gaining popularity with the many new hotels that are popping up there). Also, couples are now requesting luxury-type experiences, rather than just a beach vacation, which leads to more interesting locations like Ambergris Caye in Belize and Jumby Bay Antigua.

So that should give you plenty of food for thought when deciding where to spend your ‘moon. Let us know if you end up choosing one of the locations from the list—you really can’t go wrong with any of them.
