Fran’s ring!
The couple: Fran Burns and Anthony Berry, from Philadelphia.
The ring: My ring is a circular solitaire surrounded by a bunch of small diamonds in a double halo; it’s more than I would’ve ever imagined. Anthony went to our friend and jeweler, Chris at Gem Crafters, and they designed the ring together based off of a picture he and I had seen years ago.
The proposal: Anthony proposed on July 24, 2014. It was an unseasonably cool night, so after dinner we went to sit on our front steps in Rhawnhurst. For the past four years we had had a routine where I’d tell Anthony that he “should engage me” and it was always his response to say, “Oh, yeah?” Usually we’d laugh and move on.
Well on that night, instead of the usual response, he said, “Okay, I’ll do it tonight.” Since we’ve been together for so long, I just figured he was messing with me, but when we went inside for dessert, he went upstairs instead of following me into the kitchen. When he came back downstairs, he told me to sit on the couch and close my eyes. I could tell he was in front of me and when I opened my eyes he was down on one knee.
Afterwards I called my mom and we went over to her house a few blocks away. I also took a picture of the ring but decided against a Facebook post, except when I hit cancel, Facebook posted it anyway. There was no turning back from there; people had been waiting six years for this moment!
The band: Because our favorite color is blue, and because Anthony is a 15th district police officer, we’ve decided that I will have a band of sapphires, which will resemble the police thin blue line. We also bought a his and hers tungsten set in case we go away and don’t think it best to bring the sapphire ring.
