PW Reader Ring: Megan & Kyle!

Megan's ring!

Megan’s ring!

The couple: Megan Whitmore and Kyle Bachmann, Northeast Philly.

The ring: My beautiful engagement ring is a white-gold radiant cut diamond in a halo setting. To me the ring is a classic look with a twist, since it’s neither a round-cut diamond nor a princess-cut diamond with a halo. Radiant cuts are a combo of the brilliance of the round cut but with a square shape.

Kyle did have an idea of the kind of ring I wanted, because I always hinted that I wanted a halo in my setting—but as far as the center stone shape, that was all him! (Unless he had been peeking at my Pinterest board.)

Kyle did his homework before buying. He shopped and talked with many jewelers in the Philadelphia suburbs and in Center City. He finally decided on purchasing the ring from Barsky on Jewelers’ Row.

The proposal: Kyle has always known that getting my father’s blessing is very important to me and my father, and with my father living in Minnesota, where I am originally from, it wasn’t something that he could do easily. I had a strong feeling that during a trip  we were taking to Minnesota the last weekend in May, Kyle would ask for my dad’s blessing. Little did I know, though, that he was asking for his blessing and proposing to me within the same the trip!

We had planned the trip back to my home town for my younger brother’s high school graduation. My brother’s graduation party took place that Sunday afternoon at my dad’s house. Little did I know that throughout the party, Kyle, my sister and my brother were going around and telling all my family members that Kyle was planning to propose that night!

As the party was winding down, my sister asked me to run an errand to Target with her, and when we were on our way back, she said that everyone was out on the deck with some drinks and a bonfire. When we arrived she told me to just go ahead out and she’d meet me on the deck, so I walked around the back of the house and saw Kyle sitting there. As I got closer, I could see that the entire deck was lit up with lights, there were rose petals everywhere, and one of our songs was playing in the background.

I just stopped and stared at him, and the first words out of his mouth were, “Please don’t start crying”—but boom, the water works just came! He gave me the sweetest speech and got down on one knee and I replied with “Of course!” And loud cheers and applause erupted as my Minnesota family members got to see the whole thing! The rest of the night consisted of hugs, kisses and champagne; lots of champagne.

The band: I am pretty sure I will keep the band simple and have it match the engagement setting, but who is to say once I start trying them on!
