The couple: Maura Burns and Derrell Thompson, from Conshohocken.

The ring: My ring is a princess-cut solitaire diamond with platinum prongs on a white gold band. Derrell picked it out from Kay Jewelers. He knew I wanted something simple and classic, so he passed on some options with multiple diamonds and went for the style he knew I’d like best.

The proposal: After six years of dating, I knew that it was coming, but I didn’t know exactly when. I had a feeling it was going to be Thanksgiving weekend, so I told everyone not to judge me for acting crazy. And actually, my horoscope predicted that something good would happen on November 21, so I scheduled a date night in case it really was the night. We went out to a nice dinner at the Fayette Street Grill, I brought a really nice bottle of wine, but there was no ring in sight. I was wrong!

The next day, we were hosting our first “Friendsgiving” at our new place. As I was getting ready for the dinner party, my friend asked if I was wearing the outfit I wanted to get engaged in, because she felt like it could be that night, too. Little did either of us know, it really would be!

I was running around and preoccupied with hosting, so I didn’t expect it at that moment—it didn’t even cross my mind until he started his speech! He got down on one knee, and the rest is history. There were tons of videos and photos from everyone standing around the room, and I still cry watching the video. It was the best night of my life!

The band: My band is going to be made from diamonds out of my grandmother’s engagement and wedding rings. The diamonds will go most of the way around the band to jazz up my classic engagement ring.
