How to Set Up a Phone Charging Station at Your Wedding

When social media plays a large role in memorializing every moment of your Big Day, a fully-charged cell phone becomes a vital tool for both you and your guests.

To avoid an influx of dead batteries mid-reception, we’ve seen couples setting up a charging station at their venue so that guests can conveniently refuel their phones without having to search for a stray outlet (which, from our experience, usually leads to abandoning your phone in the bathroom or squatting awkwardly in a dress near a floor outlet in a ballroom. Not that we’ve specifically done that or anything).

DIY-ing a little charging station for your wedding is actually simpler than it sounds—and, we swear, it can even look pretty!—which we found out after chatting with Sara Murray of local event planning and design firm Confetti & Co.

  • She recommends popping a power strip or two into a cute keepsake box (you can buy one like this or this, or oftentimes you’ll see people decorate and cut holes in a shoe box) so that the charger cables can stick out neatly without looking like a jumbled mess.
  • Similarly, you can conceal the power strip with a pretty arrangement of flowers or a planter of grass (like the picture above!) which does wonders to conceal unsightly wires.
  • And, as Murray says, you’ve got to “let your guests know what’s up!” so accompanying signage is a must, too.  A simple “Power Bar” sign (though we loved a “Charge yer phones” one we saw once) will do, and you can talk to your florist or planner about ideas for pretty-ing it up.

For past clients, Murray has also tucked mobile chargers—she loves these adorable ones—into welcome bags, but she suggests putting a whole bunch of them in a basket at your reception so guests can grab them when they need a quick charge.

After all, you want people to take advantage of your custom hashtag or the app you’re using to corral everyone’s photos, right?
