Question: My friend, a graphic designer, offered her services for our wedding invitations as her gift. I’m concerned, though, about getting into an awkward situation where I’m not happy with the results. Is it rude to tell her no thank you?

Answer: Dealing with friends and family who want to contribute their talents to your wedding can be tricky, but it’s best to graciously accept the gift, making sure to be clear about your vision, says Lauren Lerner of Philly’s Lauren James Events. “Share your ideas, images, and the style that you are looking for to ensure that your friend understands and is able to execute,” she says.

If your friend isn’t able to create the end result you desire, Lerner suggests putting her expertise and creativity to use in other ways, such as having her do the menu cards or signs at the cocktail hour.
