Bride-to-be Blogger Carolyn: Bridesmaid Dress Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Bridesmaid’s dress shopping is something that I’ve been procrastinating for a while now. To be honest, I think I probably should have already started shopping, but I’m just not too sure where to start. There are just so many choices!

First off, my wedding is in the summer, so I’d like dresses that are made from lighter fabric. I really like the way chiffon looks—flowy and airy, perfect for summer! However, I’m not married to the idea of the same fabric on every girl. I feel like a little variation is nice, and lets the girls choose what they like best. I also thought short dresses may be the way to go … but then this summer’s maxi dress-trend has me doubting myself. Maybe I should let the girls choose their length as well? I just don’t know!

The color of the dresses is also up for debate. I am so tempted to put them all in varying shades of light pink or peach, but I do respect that everyone (including Chris) may not love pink as much as I do. Therefore, I’m a little more inclined to choose a gray or blue dress. Do they all have to be the same shade? That one I’m unsure about, as well.

I realize that these aren’t life-or-death decisions I’m making, so I just don’t understand why I’m so indecisive about this! To be honest, I just want to have the bridesmaids in something they feel good in, and are comfortable wearing. I think I just need to bite the bullet and go to a store and get started. Wish me luck!

Did you have trouble figuring out where to start in choosing your bridesmaids’ dresses? What decision should I make first and go from there—color, style, or fabric?

This is just personal opinion and you are free to disregard it if you want, but I think bridesmaids dresses should be close to the same length and made of the same or similar material. That way they all look like they are going to the same wedding. They can still have a choice of style within those guidelines though. They could still from strapless, halter, one shoulder, etc.
    Again, just an opinion/suggestion.

If you’re really ambivalent and don’t have a strong preference either way, I say, (a) yes, bite the bullet and start shopping and maybe you’ll find a preference or (b) ask your photographer. I know (b) sounds kinda crazy, but you found such an amazing photographer who you ARE truly excited about. It’s obvious the photographer has great taste and an eye for this kind of thing so he may have insight into what will look good for pictures (e.g., same color, same length, totally doesn’t matter, etc.). Sometimes things look good in person, but maybe different in photos?

I’d go with color first for the bridemaids along the lines of your floral color theme…then it’s easy…I’ve seen varying lengths and slightly different styles in wedding attendants and they all looked great….it’s a reflection of your personal style…your day and your choice….enjoy!!
