On February 23, 2011, Philadelphia magazine held its annual PHILLY COOKS event at the Crystal Tea Room. Guests tasted dishes from the city’s top restaurants, relaxed in the sleek Mercedes-Benz Supper Club Lounge, sipped wine and cocktails, and enjoyed live entertainment by DJ Chef Marc Weiss. On February 21, 2011, hundreds of guests attended an exclusive Season Preview Party celebrating the Walnut Street Theatre’s exciting 203rd Anniversary Season. Twenty-three fine city restaurants offered delicious samplings from their menus. Additionally, seven local refreshment companies provided samples. Four of Philly’s top local performers — Ben Dibble, Kim Carson, Scott Greer and Brandon O’Rourke — sang selections from the Walnut’s upcoming season and Producing Artistic Director Bernard Havard hosted a question-and-answer session in the theater. On Saturday, February 12, 2011, guests from all over the Delaware Valley came out to support the American Heart Association’s annual Heart of Philadelphia. Chaired by Dr. Richard Shannon, the Heart of Philadelphia raised $1 million for cardiovascular disease and stroke research and education in Southeastern PA. Honorees included Governor Edward G. Rendell, who received the Heart of Philadelphia award and Dr. Andrew S. Wechsler, who received the Edward S. Cooper, M.D. award. Held at the Urban Outfitters Headquarters in the Navy Yard, 600 guests dined on filet and diver scallops, along with an assortment mini low-fat and low-calorie desserts. On February 11, 2011, Bryn Mawr College awarded their prestigious Katharine Hepburn Medal to President and Chief Executive Officer of CARE Helene Gayle at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. The Katharine Hepburn Medal recognizes women who change their worlds: those whose lives, work and contributions embody the intelligence, drive and independence of the four-time Oscar winner. Award recipients are chosen on the basis of their commitment and contributions to the Hepburn women’s greatest passions—film and theater, civic engagement and women’s health. On February 11, 2011, the Wilma Theater honored former governor Ed Rendell with the Wilma Star Award at the Theater Lovers Fęte, held at the Ormandy Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel. Incorporating sultry and sophisticated Parisian flair, the actors paid homage to the world-renowned Moulin Rouge. The evening began with a cocktail reception, followed by a unique cabaret performance by The Bearded Ladies, an awards presentation, and dancing to the soulful sounds of LeRoy Hawks and the Hypnotics. Guests experienced a night of revelry accompanied by a grand silent auction, casino game tables, a sumptuous dessert buffet, and an aphrodisiac-inspired carte du jour. Photography by Jauhien Sasnou
