On March 1st, the Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner at the Crystal Tea Room started with a silent auction and cocktails before keynote speaker, former guv of Vermont and 2004 presidential hopeful, Howard Dean took the stage for the evening's presentation. The ticket proceeds went to the Human Rights Campaign organization, who help promote equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people nationwide.

Once again, one of the best events for the Young Friends crowd, the Red Cross's annual Red Ball was held at the Union League on March 1st. The event was oversold - the ticket takers stopped counting after the 1,000th ticket was sold. There was an abundance of red dresses and cumberbunds, but some people purposely wore anything but red.

On Monday, February 24th Novelty restaurant's executive chef Chris Scott and sous chef David Thorpe hosted a seven-course dinner with the region's top African American chefs. Novelty's owner, Bruce Cooper, generously donated his restaurant for the evening's benefit. The seven cooked the meal together to benefit Philadelphia's African American Museum. Guests enjoyed culinary creations by Joe Hunt of Bluezette, Luis Melendez of La Bohème, Tracey Hopkins of the Philadelphia Art Museum, Joe Brown of Mélange Café, and Fatou N'Diaye of Fatou & Fama.

The Ritz-Carlton and Philadelphia Magazine hosted a Vodka Tasting off the Rotunda, with no fewer than 10 different Vodka brands on Tuesday, March 4th. Cocktail sippers gathered in small groups for several hours, milling about with their mini Cosmos and Appletinis.

On Sunday, February 9th, The Ritz-Carlton hosted a benefit dinner and auction for the James Beard Foundation in their sumptuous ballroom below the rotunda honoring devoted foodies, Harriet and Shelly Margolis. Guest chefs from six different restaurants joined the Ritz's Philippe Reininger in presenting a six course gourmet feast. Despite someone's (not the Ritz's) poor planning on the timing of the dishes (the live auction was staged between courses, dragging the event out to nearly five hours) when the fare did appear, it was to everyone's delight.
