On October 1st, Saks Fifth Avenue hosted a benefit luncheon, fashion presentation and special shopping event to support the work of non-profit youth development organization Philadelphia Academies, Inc. Under the leadership of Lisa Johnson Nutter, Philadelphia Academies, Inc. serves 4,500 youth in Philadelphia public high schools, providing career-based learning, college readiness supports and positive adult networks to prepare young people for success in college and in careers. Saks contributed five percent of sale proceeds from the shopping event to programming, internship preparation and industry pipeline initiatives for Philadelphia Academies, Inc. students.
On Thursday, September 30th, Boyds and the Italian Trade Commission (ITC) hosed La Bella Vita, an evening celebrating the beautiful life and all things Italian at the boutique store’s location at 1818 Chestnut Street. Boyds transformed their historic building paying homage to Italian style, and featured window vignettes with Italian beauties and Vespa displays, as well as Maserati & Lamborghini displays from F.C. Kerbeck. New collections from Italian designers such as Armani Collezioni, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Love Moschino, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo and Etro were on display throughout the store. Various entertainment and other Italian-inspired happenings took place throughout the evening including sounds by DJ Jon Gill and DJ Neil Jackson and a special live performance by the Philadelphia Opera Company. Moore College of Art & Design presented its 2010 Visionary Woman Awards to photographer and educator Wendy Ewald, couture handbag designer Judith Leiber and art historian and curator Ann Temkin. Ewald, Leiber and Temkin accepted the Visionary Woman Award at a gala on Thursday, September 30 at the College. The gala, attended by 280 guests raised $313,000, with proceeds going to support the Visionary Woman Scholarships. Since 2003, the Award has become a signature event at Moore each fall. In 2005, the College designated proceeds from the Visionary Woman Awards benefit Visionary Woman Scholarships. Since then, 24 four-year scholarships have been awarded. Photography by Mark Garvin.
On Wednesday, September 29th, locals joined for Isabella’s (382 E Elm St, Conshohocken, PA 19428) soft opening. The place was packed, with guests ranging from Elizabeth Wellington, Nancy and David Gansky, Michael and Pam Katz, and Jennaphr Frederick to Carrie Brescia, Michele Malin Seidman, and Jamie Joffe. They enjoyed a variety of dishes, including tuna Nicoise, mussels, assorted cheeses, and brick-oven pizzas. Guests also sampled Intercourse beer. The menu emphasized organic, fresh, and locally sourced ingredients thanks to chef Michael Cappon, who was previously Director of Culinary Operations at Marathon and El Vez. On Wednesday, September 29th, 2010, trendsetters packed The Market & Shops at Comcast Center for the Sixth Annual Rittenhouse Row Fall Gathering sponsored by Infiniti, Citizens Bank and Southern Wine & Spirits. Models from the area's most stylish boutiques and salons strutted down the runway during the fashion show, as Rittenhouse Row's talented bartenders mixed this season's newest cocktails.
