The future of children's tennis was celebrated by over 900 guests, celebrities and at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Manayunk on Saturday, April 21st. The Hawaiian-theme evening (you'll note the lovely array of flora and fauna worn by guests) was started with a rousing performance by several of the center's children whose lives have been bettered by tennis. The18th annual benefit featured its famous silent and live auctions, with some truly extravagant items; a $25,000 two-week deluxe trip to Australia from Swain Australia Tours); a private dinner for 12 at megachef George Perrier's house; and tickets to the French Open with hotel and airfare. Proceeds from the event benefit 6,000 youngsters throughout the Philadelphia Area.

The 16th annual SCANtastic was held at Memorial Hall on Friday, April 20th to benefit SCAN, the Supportive Child/Adult network, aka, Stop Child Abuse Now. All proceeds from this benefit go directly to SCAN, which offers services free of charge to its clients. Over 2,000 guests arrived to support this cause and were treated to a food wonderland, catered by 150 restaurants. If they could move after feasting, partiers danced to the tunes of at least 5 bands before placing bids in the silent auction. To volunteer at SCAN, call 215-590-1504.

The 40th annual Philadelphia Antique Show opened its doors on Friday, April 6, 2001 with the Opening Night Preview Gala. Over 1,500 dealers, collectors, antiques lovers and volunteers gathered at this oh-so-genteel party in support of The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. This year's special loan exhibit commemorated the 125th anniversary of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and featured American and European needlework, such as embroidery, samplers, quilts, costumes and accessories.

Look out art world! We heard that Moore College of Art & Design was holding their 2001 Honors Convocation on April 6th. To get a sneak peek at Philly's up and comers we went to the reception and got some of these young talents on film. And don't miss their Senior Exhibition on April 25th, or the Fashion Show May 9th.

Anchors away! The Community Coalition, a grass-roots organization made up of four volunteer programs, hopped aboard the Forbes' family yacht, the Highlander, on Saturday, April 28th. The boat cruised around Philadelphia while members and guests perused the auction items and had a lovely supper. The Young Friends faction was in attendance as well, taking over the master bedroom at one point for a mini-meeting. For more information about the Community Coalition, call 1-610-827-9232, or go to www.thecommunitycoalition.org.
