The Young Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art held their kickoff to the social season with their annual Rodin Party on September 19th, at, where else – The Rodin Museum on the parkway. Over 500 guests buzzed hither and thither down the paths bordering the shallow pool. Despite having an open beer and wine bar, no one managed a swim that night. Later, after the museum closed at 8:30, the apres-fete was held at the Philadelphia Raquet Club in Center City. The remaining 300 or so partiers stayed tucked in a high-ceilinged, plush, maroon room that still managed to feel cozy until the last of them dwindled to numbers small enough to be accomodated by Rouge, which is where the party finally wound down late-nite.

On September 15th The Institute of Contemporary Art kicked off its newest exhibit showcasing Rudi Gernreich's fashion creations of the 1960's and 70's, which include topless bathing suits and micro-miniskirts (cue the chorus of men cheering). After the opening reception, guests headed over to the Zellerbach Theatre of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts for a concert given by noted singer/composer John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground. This ICA exhibit, Rudi Gernreich: Fashion Will Go Out of Fashion runs from September 15th to November 11th, 2001.

On Monday, August 27 the Mann Center for Performing Arts celebrated its 25th anniversary with conductor Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic in an All-Beethoven performance - 25 years after their Mann Center debut! The Mann offers diverse, world-class entertainment and nothing captures the spirit of that better than this internationally acclaimed orchestra. After the concert, guests gathered under the stars to watch the fireworks and top off the evening with a cake and champagne birthday celebration.

A world of art, music, dance, films, food and fun awaits you each week for Wednesday night at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as it hosts different musical groups, shows themed films, and runs gallery lectures on various artists or art forms. They also cook a meal in the spirit of the evening. On Wednesday, August 22, the event was called "Pickin' and Hoofin' at the PMA." Folk music, percussive dancer Sandy Silva, and the Gallery Talk, "Pickin' with Pippin", with Sarah Powers, the Curatorial Assistant in Modern and Contemporary Art drew a diverse crowd of nearly 450. Also, watch out for the PMA's upcoming Friday nights for the young professionals crowd starting in early October.

There are few things quite as thrilling as sitting before an incredible selection of silky, sensuous cheeses that are waiting to be paired with an ambitious by-the-glass wine program. Bistro St. Tropez has both. So, on August 8th, DiBruno Brothers Cheese shop (Best Of winner of our Center City Cheese Shop, 2001) and the Moore Bros. wine aficionados came together at Bistro St. Tropez to guide over 40 eager tasters in a wine and cheese pairing. Bistro St. Tropez closed off their bar area for us, blissfully smoke-free, and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely while watching the sun set.
