On March 5, 2011, Girard College hosted a fundraiser for the schools educational programs. Renée Chenault-Fattah, newscaster from NBC10, was the mistress of ceremonies for the event and President Graves presented the Corinthian award to Willie F. Johnson, local businessman and community leader. Billed as THE Party with a Purpose, the 2011 “Good Friends” Gala was an enormous success. More than 300 alumni and friends of Girard came out to enjoy a festive evening in beautiful Founder’s Hall, including gourmet hors d’oeuvres and dinner, a brief program and dancing. Om March 4, 2011 the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania honored Dr. Mike Cirigliano, Penn Medicine internist and FOX29 Medical Correspondent, as its 2011 Mardi Gras King. The Mardi Gras Gala, which took place at the Palace at the Ben, was adapted from the traditional event in New Orleans and featured an evening complete with Mummers’, hurricanes, a French Creole sit-down dinner, dancing and lively music provided by Tribeca Grand. A parade, extravagant decorations, beads, doubloons, voodoo dolls, and masks all added to the festive décor. Money raised benefits the Foundation’s free programs and services, focusing on education, advocacy and support for those affected by epilepsy/seizure disorder. Photography by Jonathan Meter
The National Constitution Center celebrated the opening of "Spies, Traitors & Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America" with a reception on Thursday, March 3, 2011. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors’ oeuvres followed by an exclusive preview of the provocative exhibition created by the International Spy Museum. The opening ceremony included remarks by Vince Stango, National Constitution Center COO; Peter Earnest, Founding Executive Director of the International Spy Museum and a 35-year veteran of the CIA, and Mike Jerrick, FOX 29 Good Day Philadelphia anchor. On Thursday, March 3, 2011, Philadelphia magazine celebrated the launch of its new LGBT publication, G Philly—Your Guide to Gay Philadelphia and the Suburbs. More than 200 guests gathered at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel for the unveiling of the premiere issue, supported by sponsors Wells Fargo, PECO, Smirnoff and Coors Light. Guests indulged in cocktails and hors d'œuvres as they enjoyed beats by DJ Jon Gill and were treated to a sneak peek of the upcoming event, Dragapalooza: Broadway Divas. On Thursday, February 24, 2011, at the Harriton High School Gymnasium, the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation hosted a text drive called Lisa’s Army Texts “10” for Teal. Lisa Loonstyn, 22, was recently re-diagnosed with ovarian cancer after going into remission in 2008. To help Lisa with her medical care costs, the foundation has launched this fundraiser.
